Leave it to Louis Vuitton to solve a handbag problem that we didn’t even know we had – how do you get more handbags on the runway than there are models to carry them without weighing down the ready-to-wear? As it turns out, the answer is creating a travel-themed show, complete with a functioning train, and giving the models each a uniform-clad porter to carry her “luggage.” Louis Vuitton took full advantage of these runway helpers, loading each model-helper down with multiple bags – sometimes as many as four.

That meant that we got to see a lot of lovely luggage on the runway, from oversized crocodile hat boxes to traditional luggage suitcases. Things got a little harrier when the show moved on to regular handbags, though, both figuratively and literally. While some of the fur-detailed monogram bags were lovely, other fur-covered satchels looked a little bit too much like Cousin It. Also, I’m not sure how high-end the weathered circular hardware closures used on many of the bags looks. As much as I loved last season’s Louis Vuitton collection, this one might take some getting used to.

City councilwoman Margaret Chin, who represents the Chinatown district, is introducing a bill this Thursday that proposes harsh punishment for shoppers caught purchasing counterfeits, the New York Post is reporting. Under Chin’s bill, that fake LV  bags could cost you $1,000 in fines (still not quite the cost of some of the real deals) or up to a year in prison.

Sound harsh? That’s the point.

“We don’t want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods,” Chin told the Post. “It’s a very big problem…People are still coming, and the industry is growing, and we have to stop the demand. We need people to know that they are feeding this demand.”

Chin already has five co-sponsors for the bill but is it enough to deter true bargain hunters? Shoppers have to be caught in the act to face jail time or pay the fine, and a cop told the Post that enforcing the bill is “never going to fly.”
